The Memorial to the Forgotten Patriots is located amidst beautiful nature with an impressive view of the western Krkonose Mountains. It was established in 1958 in the premises of the former parish building thanks to several enthusiasts from Paseky and to the willing donors of valuable family heirlooms, originally as a literary memorial dedicated to the memory of the scribe, violin maker, and teacher's assistant Venceslav Metelka, whose character inspired Karel Vaclav Rais in his novel Forgotten Patriots.
Public interest led to the gradual expansion of the collections and exhibition spaces. In the museum, for example, you can see a demonstration of work on weaving looms; children will surely be fascinated by the moving nativity scene. Recently, the restored curtain of the Paseky amateur theater group has also been installed in the exhibition.
An audio guide in three languages—Polish, German, and English—is prepared for visitors who do not speak Czech.
In the 19th century, the saying was: Every Czech is a musician. Music echoed even in the most remote villages of the Krkonose Mountains, and skilled musicians often played more than one instrument. To play, good instruments were also needed. At that time, Venceslav Metelka established his workshop for building and repairing string instruments in Paseky, and he is therefore considered the founder of the Krkonose Mountains Violin Making School. His descendants and students developed the art and fame of the school at home and abroad, and the tradition, which began in a small mountain village, lives on to this day.
One museum exhibition is dedicated to the school; here you can also watch a short film "The Birth of a Violin" and thus delve into the secrets of this unique craft.
