General Gablenz Memorial

Trutnov

A Place of Memory and Views

On the hill of Sibenik above Trutnov stands a cast iron obelisk commemorating the victorious battle of the Austrian army near Trutnov on June 27, 1866—the only Austrian victory on the northern front of the Austro-Prussian War.

The memorial was established in 1868 in honor of General Ludvik Gablenz, who then led the 10th Army Corps. The monument also functions as a lookout tower—you can climb the internal spiral staircase to the observation platform, where you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful view of Trutnov and the surrounding landscape.

Inside the memorial, you will also find a crypt, where the remains of General Gablenz are interred; they were brought to Trutnov from Zurich after his death in 1874.

The names of fallen officers and the numbers of soldiers from the individual units are listed on the monument. The victory at Trutnov came at a high price—almost 5,000 Austrian soldiers fell, which is four times more than on the Prussian side.
