In the very center of Jilemnice stands a Classicist town hall, built after a fire in 1789 on the site of the original medieval magistrate’s house. Its tower hides an exceptional technical rarity – a still fully mechanical repeating clock from the mid-19th century.
The clock chimes every quarter hour. First, it signals the number of quarters, then the number of full hours, with each type of strike having a distinct tone. Thanks to this, time can easily be recognized just by listening, without having to look at the clock face. In a single day, the clock's hammers strike a total of 1,020 times – and still work absolutely reliably.
The town hall today serves as the seat of the municipal office, but you can view the clock tower with a guide from the information center.
