Memorial to the Victims of the Mountains

Pec pod Sněžkou

A Quiet Place with a Powerful Story

In the saddle between Lucni and Studnicni Mountain stands a chapel reminding us that the beauty of the mountains can also be treacherous. Right here, fog, blizzards, and sudden changes in weather often linger – conditions that once claimed the lives of many Krkonose residents.

The chapel was built in memory of Vaclav Renner, the tenant of Lucni bouda, who died here in 1798 while transporting wood. Nearby stands Renner's Cross, commemorating the tragic death of Jakob Renner, who got lost here in a snowstorm. The place is closely linked to the history of Bila louka and Lucni bouda, as well as to the stories of others who lost their way in bad weather.

In 1957, the chapel was restored and dedicated to all the victims of the mountains. Today it serves as a memorial site and also as a quiet reminder that even a well-known route can conceal unexpected dangers in bad weather.
