Monument to Victims of the Mountains

Pec pod Sněžkou

On a beautiful sunny day, not many tourists passing by here realise that it is one of the harshest places in the whole Krkonose, and it was not by chance that the small chapel was built here.

The chapel, at an altitude of 1509 m a.s.l., reminds us of the bad reputation this place has due to frequent fogs and snowstorms. But besides this, together with the nearby Renneruv crucifix, it is closely linked to the former tenants at Lucni chalet and Bila louka meadow, for whom the pass between the Lucni and Studnicni mountains was indeed fatal. The chapel was built in memory of Vaclav Renner, who died here in 1798 while stocking wood from Lahrovy chalet. In 1856, Monika Rennerova almost froze to death here, and was only fortunately saved by her son. The nearby Renneruv crucifix marks the place where her father Jakob Renner died when he lost his way in a snowstorm at noon on 11 April 1868. The Renners were not the only ones for whom this was a dangerous spot. A Bohemian printing master with his wife and, surprisingly, with two dogs also died here.

The chapel was adapted in 1957 as a monument to the victims of the mountains. It is a place of reverence and memory to all those who lost their lives in the Krkonose, and reminds passers-by to be cautious.
