Typical timbered folk houses can be found in many places in the town. They were made of logs worked into a block shape and painted yellow, red, brown, green or black, often using animal blood. The log joints were filled with moss and clay and then painted with lime. The roofs were usually made from shingle or thatch. Each timbered house had many decorative features which gave it a specific character. Decorations were used mostly on the window casings, doors and gables. Every timbered house featured a room with a furnace as the only inhabitable room, where the whole family with several children lived. A stable for a goat or cow, the rudimentary source of living, was another main part of the house.
