This mountain village is located at the foothills of the western Krkonoše. It benefited from the construction of a railway line from Stará Paka to Trutnov in 1871, with a side line to Rokytnice nad Jizerou from 1899. The gemstones from the Krkonoše’s foothills were very popular during the reign of King Charles IV. and Rudolph II. This popularity led to the rise of the renowned Krkonoše precious stone industry. The Martinice ponds, although not very large, belong to the old Czech fishpond systems and are older than the most well-known systems in Southern Bohemia. The belfry of St John of Nepomuk, built in 1845, is an important religious monument.
