Malá Úpa was founded by lumberjacks from Alpine countries, namely the Tyrol, Carinthia and Styria, in the 17th century. Today it is one of the few traditional Krkonoše villages. Typical mountain chalets, rich meadows and pasture land, dense forests and crystal-clear air and water attract visitors. The village lies near Sněžka, the highest Czech mountain, and is a well-situated starting point for mountain tourism in the eastern Krkonoše. The Fairytale Trail in Horní Malá Úpa provides excellent entertainment for families with children, featuring ten fairytales by the renowned Krkonoše writer Marie Kubátová. In winter this is a paradise for cross-country skiers and downhill skiers, who can use the several ski-lifts in the Pomezní Boudy resort. The picturesque Church of St Peter and Paul, built in 1805 in the Baroque style, is an important historical monument in the town.
