The town is renowned especially for its spa, designed for the treatment of limbs. The first hot spring was discovered in 1006, initially only used to drive a wheel that actuated an iron ore crusher built nearby. The first records on the use of thermal water date back to the 14th century. In 1920 the spa with its facilities, land and springs was acquired by a joint stock company, and the period of greatest development of the town followed soon after. In 1935 a method for treating palsy was introduced, and the spa became globally renowned a few years later thanks to its success in the treatment. Besides the spa, the town is a well-known sports and recreation centre. The first cable car in Bohemia was put into operation in 1928 between Janské Lázně and Černá hora mountain. After almost 80 years of operation, it was dismantled and replaced with a new 8-seat cable car.
