Castle Kostal Ruins
Map: View

On a hill southwest of the village of Kostalov, the modest ruins of the Gothic Castle Kostal which dates back to the 14th century, can be found. It was founded by the Valdstejn family around 1361. The demesne was attached to the Semily demesne at the end of the 15th century. The castle was mentioned as abandoned in 1514. The castle stood on the eastern side of the village at the top of a hill which is some 40 m higher than the surrounding land. The northern and southern hillsides are moderate, therefore, the castle had to be guarded there by a system of ramparts and ditches. There was a large residential tower on the elevated southern part, around which a smaller yard was surrounded by a wall. Only dilapidated foundation walls, shallow recesses after cellars and a deeper recess after the castle water well have been preserved.
